Which Kenyan passport do you need?

Kenya passport types are simpler than they look on the eCitizen form, but the choice still matters. All ordinary Kenyan passports are now chip-based e-passports issued by the Department of Immigration Services. What differs is the number of pages in the booklet, the price, and whether the passport is for an adult or a child. Choose too few pages and a frequent traveller fills the booklet years before it expires.

This guide explains the types of passport, who should choose a larger booklet, how long a passport lasts, what changes for children, and when you should renew rather than apply as if new. It does not list fees or the exact page options on offer, because both have changed more than once; eCitizen shows the current ones when you apply.

Kenya passport types and who they are for

The ordinary passport is the one almost everyone needs: for holidays, work, study and visiting family abroad. There are also diplomatic and official passports for people travelling on government business, issued only on the request of the relevant office. If you are not travelling on official duty, the ordinary passport is the right one.

Within the ordinary passport, booklets have come in different page counts, with a higher price for more pages. The sizes on offer have changed over time, and smaller booklets have been withdrawn for many adult applications, so the choice you see on eCitizen may be narrower than what friends had a few years ago.

Within parts of East Africa, Kenyans can cross some borders with a national ID instead of a passport. That is handy for short trips to neighbouring countries, but the rules differ by country and route, and it is no substitute for a passport if you fly further, need a visa or plan to stay for long. Check the current rules of the country you are going to before you rely on an ID alone.

All e-passports carry a chip holding your photo and details, which border systems read automatically. Older non-chip passports have been phased out. If you still hold one, treat it as expired and apply for an e-passport before you plan any travel.

Pages, validity and how often you travel

An adult passport is valid for ten years. The question is whether the booklet will last that long. Each entry and exit stamp uses space, many countries put full-page visas in the passport, and some immigration officers refuse to stamp a page that already has stamps on it. A person who travels for work several times a year can fill a small booklet in a few years.

If you travel rarely, for example a single trip abroad every year or two, the smallest booklet on offer will almost certainly last its full validity. If you travel often, cross borders in East Africa by road, or expect to need visas for several countries, choose the largest booklet available. The extra cost is far less than replacing a full passport early.

Remember the six-month rule many countries apply: your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay. A passport that "expires next year" can already be too short for a long visa. Check your expiry date before you book anything.

Think about the coming ten years, not just the next trip. A student who plans to work abroad after graduating, a trader who expects to buy stock in other countries, or a parent whose children live overseas will all travel more than they do today. Choosing for the life you expect is cheaper than replacing a full booklet.

When the pages run out, you apply again, even if the passport has years left. Choosing the right size at the start avoids paying twice within ten years.

Passports for children

Every child travelling internationally needs their own passport; children cannot be added to a parent's. The application is made by a parent or guardian from their own eCitizen account, and the child appears at the appointment.

The passport office asks for the child's birth certificate, the parents' IDs or passports, and consent from the parents. Where one parent is absent, deceased or the parents are separated, extra documents such as a death certificate or a court order on custody may be needed. If your child does not yet have a birth certificate, read our guide to late birth registration first, because nothing can proceed without it.

Allow extra time for a child's first passport. If anything about the parents' documents is incomplete, such as a missing parent on the birth certificate, the application can be held until it is resolved, and school holidays are when the passport offices are busiest.

Children grow quickly, and a photo from infancy may no longer look like a ten-year-old. Some countries question a passport where the photo no longer resembles the child. Plan to renew a child's passport when they change significantly, even if it has not expired.

Renewal or a new application?

If you already have a Kenyan e-passport, you renew it rather than apply as if you never had one. Renewal is made on eCitizen with the old passport, and the new one carries your existing details. Our passport renewal service handles the form and the appointment booking.

A new application is for a first passport, or when the old one is not an e-passport. It needs your birth certificate and ID, and for some applicants extra documents, such as a parent's ID. Our new passport application service covers that case.

Check every detail on the application before you submit. Your name must match your ID exactly, and the photo must meet the rules on background and expression. Errors found at the appointment can mean a second visit, and errors found after printing mean a new passport.

A lost or stolen passport is replaced with its own process, which starts with a police abstract. Do not wait until you need to travel to report a lost passport; a missing passport in someone else's hands is a serious identity risk.

If you also hold another country's citizenship, read our guide to dual citizenship in Kenya before you renew. Using the right passport at the right border avoids awkward questions.

Common questions

How long is a Kenyan passport valid?

An adult passport is valid for ten years. It is replaced earlier if the pages run out, it is damaged, or it is lost.

Which booklet size should I choose?

The largest available if you travel several times a year or need visas; the smallest if you travel rarely. eCitizen shows the sizes on offer when you apply.

Can my child travel on my passport?

No. Every child needs their own passport, applied for by a parent or guardian with the child's birth certificate.

My passport still has years left but is full. What now?

Apply for a new passport through renewal. A full passport cannot have pages added.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. After the form is submitted and paid on eCitizen, you attend an appointment where your photo and fingerprints are taken. The passport is collected later or delivered where that option exists.
